Pootique of the Week: Tradinghouse Design Co.

Did you know there are over 10,000 small businesses and boutiques that sell Poo~Pourri all across America? Like Suzy Batiz, these family-owned “Pootiques” have believed in the magic of Poo~Pourri since day one. So without further adoo, let’s get to know some of these inspiring entrepreneurs…

Modern farmhouse decor lovers—get your credit cards ready! Tradinghouse Design Co. in Downtown Waco, Texas is a small family business with a passion to create and sell. Their products are handmade and built with materials that they salvage from Texas barns and old homes. The rust is genuine and not recreated. How cool is that?! Learn more about Tradinghouse Design Co.’s movie-worthy story here. Don’t live near Waco but want to shop their goodies? Lucky you! You can support their small business and shop online here.

Angel, one of the co-owners of Tradinghouse Design Co, dropped everything and had some fun with us in answering a few questions about her and her store! Let's get to know more about this pootique!

Poo: Tell us about Tradinghouse Design, Co!

Angel: We have three shops located inside Spice Village, a collection of more than 60 boutiques, in Downtown Waco, TX. We love being a part of this awesome collaboration that offers some of the best shopping. Our first shop, Bee Angels offers gifts, including Poo~Pourri, antiques, shabby chic décor, and more. Tradinghouse Design Co. has a more rustic, farmhouse look and offers home décor, vintage finds, and various handmade items including farm tables, hutches, signs, benches and whatever we feel like crafting at our shop located right here in Waco. We have been in business for 12 years this past spring; and our newest shop, Lily’s Toy Box, is full of fun for kids of all ages.

Tradinghouse Design Co has everything from farmhouse furniture to toys for the tiny tots!

Poo: How did you come up with the name of your boutique?

Angel: Bee Angels was the name of the first shop that was started when I first graduated college, before I was married or a mom.  At the time, I decided to have my name, Angel, in the business name and was planning to offer inspirational gifts so came up with Bee Angels.  When my husband joined me and we had the opportunity to expand and open another shop, we decided on Tradinghouse Design Co. since our shop where we craft many of our handmade goods in located on Tradinghouse Lake.   And Lily’s Toy Box is named after our daughter and best little helper, Lily.  Though we all contribute and work in each shop, we refer to each shop as mom’s (Bee Angels), dad’s (Tradinghouse Design Co.), or Lily’s (Lily’s Toy Box).

Beautifully handcrafted goods for everyone!

Poo: What’s the coolest thing about the town that your store is located in?

Angel: Waco is an awesome town that has a lot to offer.  From the beautiful rivers, lakes and parks, to the Cameron Park Zoo, the Mammoth site, Baylor sporting events, community colleges, great restaurants, the Magnolia Silos, shopping, various museums-Mayborn, Dr. Pepper, Texas Rangers-to a name a few.  There is something for everyone wanting to make a visit to Waco.

Poo: Has anyone ever had a memorable reaction to Poo~Pourri?

Angel: We like to stock our customer restrooms with Poo~Pourri.  One day a younger aged kid walked in and exclaimed, “It smells like Fruit Loops!”  (Much better than fruit poops!)

Lily's Toy Box has the perfect gift for your little stinker!

Poo: What is your personal favorite Poo~Pourri scent and why?

Angel: My daughter and I love Secret Santa because it means Christmas is near and we love the smell of Christmas!

Poo: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to open his or her own small business?

Angel: Owning your own business is one of the most rewarding endeavors, and we love to encourage others to follow their dreams. Though it is a lot of work, if you love your work then it doesn’t feel like work most of the time. If you pursue something that you are passionate about, it will be easier to devote the time and energy that will be required to make your business successful. Everyone experiences bumps in the road. Be persistent, stay focused but flexible and pray much!
